The Paediatric MS Clinic at the Hospital for Sick
Children (Sick Kids) was created in October 1999 to provide
comprehensive assessment, treatment, education, and
support for children and adolescents diagnosed with multiple
sclerosis and their families.
The clinic currently takes place twice a month and is run by
a team of health care professionals with expertise in childhood
MS. Patients receive regular follow-up appointments with the
team and are seen as needed during acute MS-related
relapses. Children diagnosed before turning 18 years are
followed in the clinic until they have completed high school.
The Paediatric MS Clinic receives support from the MS Society
of Canada.
In addition, the clinic is a world leader in Paediatric MS research. Our research interests include causes of MS in children, determining MRI criteria for diagnosis, the impact of MS treatment on children, and quality of life of children and adolescents with MS. Dr. Banwell is the lead investigator of
the Canada-wide study of children diagnosed with Acute
Demyelination of the CNS looking at risk factors immunology,
virology, genetic, MRI findings) for developing MS in childhood.
