The Paediatric Demyelinating Disease Program at the Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids) was established in October 1999 to provide comprehensive assessment, treatment, education, and support for children and adolescents diagnosed with demyelinating disorders and multiple sclerosis and their families.
The clinical program holds weekly clinics and is serviced by a team of health care professionals with expertise in childhood MS. Patients receive regular follow-up appointments with the team and are seen as needed during acute MS-related relapses. Children diagnosed before turning 18 years are
followed in the clinic until they have completed high school. The Paediatric Demyelinating Disease Clinic receives support from the MS Society of Canada.
In addition, the program is recognized as a world leader in pediatric MS research. Our interests include the causes of demyelinating and MS in children, determining MRI criteria for diagnosis, the impact of MS treatment on children, cognition, and quality of life of children and adolescents with MS. Dr. Banwell is the lead investigator of the prospective Canada-wide study of children diagnosed with Acute Demyelination of the CNS and is the Research Chair of the International Pediatric MS Study Group.
