What Causes Multiple Sclerosis | The exact cause of Multiple Sclerosis is unknown. Most researchers believe it is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s myelin causing a disruption in nerve transmission. The exact antigen or target of this attack is not known.
| | Tlymphocytes, together with macrophages, misguidedly attack the body’s own myelin. Tlymphocytes produce cytokines which signal the rest of the immune system to become involved in this autoimmune attack.
| Although a specific trigger for this autoimmune attack has not been identified, most researchers agree that several factors are involved including:
1) Environmental 2) Viral 3) Genetic
A consensus among neurologists is that Multiple Sclerosis occurs in response to an environmental factor which acts as a trigger for an autoimmune response to myelin in genetically susceptible individuals.
